Johnson sustained an injury in Collingwood’s VFL preseason against the Northern Bullants on the 14 of March 2025, in which the club confirmed Johnson fractured his left fibula.

The key forward flew for a mark, landing awkwardly and was required to be stretchered off.

The Magpies have yet to confirm a timeline for the young forwards' return. Johnson underwent surgery on the fractured fibula a week after the incident.

Johnson spoke to Swerve Media’s Adem Savran this morning at Olympic Park. He outlined that he would be out “for at least 10 weeks.”

This is particularly devastating news for Ash Johnson, for a player that has a significant history with injury, only managing the 27 games since 2022.

Collingwoods’ Executive General Manager of Football Charlie Gardner said: “This is disappointing news for Ash who has enjoyed a strong start to the year.”

Also, "This is obviously a significant setback, but Ash remains in good spirits all things considered and has the full support of our medical team and wider program.”

Johnson was unlucky in fronting for selection in 2024, managing just three games at senior level. However, he performed well in the VFL when he was able to stay on the park. He was having a strong pre-season and was well in the running for senior selection in the initial stages of 2025.
